Direct vs. Open-Ended Prompts
The way you phrase your prompt affects the type of response you get. Direct prompts ask for specific information, while open-ended prompts invite broader or creative answers.
Direct Prompts
- Ask for facts, lists, or specific actions
- Useful for quick, targeted answers
Example:
- "List three benefits of exercise."
- "Translate 'hello' to Spanish."
Open-Ended Prompts
- Encourage explanation, opinion, or creativity
- Useful for brainstorming or exploring ideas
Example:
- "Why is exercise important?"
- "Describe a memorable travel experience."
When to Use Each
- Use direct prompts for clear, concise answers
- Use open-ended prompts for depth, detail, or creativity
